July is damn near dead. August is HUGE. Things are changing. People are living.
With the end of July we see the end of an era: The doors of Spooky Action Palace have now been closed forever. From the summers of 2005 to 2009, SAP was THE place to be. Your favorite bands played there. Your new favorite bands played there! The birth of legendary acts & events, real and fiction. It was within these crumbling basement walls that bands such as Raccoo-oo-oon, Growing, Bloodyminded, Graveyards, Ghost Ice, Magik Markers, Hive Mind, Cadaver In Drag, Skarekrau Radio, Lambsbread, and countless others played to crowds eager to have their minds warped, in a city so tame. Who can forget HALLUCINATIONS ARE REAL (A 3-day concert featuring premiere acts from Finland & seminal artists in the new experimental world: Herta Lussa Assa, Lau Nau, Kuupuu, Islaja, The Skaters, and Burning Star Core)!? The one and only Navy Black performance! Remember when Awesome Color stopped by and put your body into shock? Religious Knives in the dead of summer? These are times I cherish and remember with a fondness that can be unmatched. I thank the inzane genius behind it all, Michael Ferrer. I thank the neverending hands that made these unimaginable times realised: H. Lindsy Donahue, Jeremy Kannapell, Joseph Raglani, Rick Wilson, Chris Smentowski, Susannah Halliday, and the list goes on... I love you, Spooky Action Palace. Rest In Peace.
Mike Pitts. A musical genius. King of heady drone. Guitar wizard. Chymes in Black Water. Farewell, Farewell, Farewell. My good friend, Mike Pitts, will be making the trek to the infamous Windy City on August 1st. You may know him from his ear-shattering drone sets in basements all around town. An experimental staple in a city that is constantly growing musically, Pitts is responsible for shredding the heads of many. His work in Bikini Acid can not be replicated. His solo output has been phenomenal. We can never forget the slowburners cranked out by Halve Beards (Mike Pitts & David Greteman). You will be missed, dear friend. We wish you the best of luck.
Enter Antarctica, the new bar in town opened by Tim Flynn. Antarctica premieres as the new haven for independent music & cinema in St. Louis. Come witness the first show at the new space on Monday, July 27th! Ga'an (featuring members of the Coughs & Oakeater) come down from Chicago to blend progressive rhythms with throbbing synth and swirling melodies. Imagine Goblin (Argento's Suspiria OST) vs Fabio Frizzi (Fulci's Zombie)! Local haunted chamber duo, Lonely Procession open with a fascinating coupling of dark cello & exhaust electronics. Assfeist performs their first set in over a year. An all-vocal group, Assfeist is everyone and no one. Masked under a blanket of screams and weeps, witness the true sounds of Hell. Antarctica is located at 5226 Gravois Ave. (near Bevo Mill). Show starts promptly at 10pm and is $5. After party at the Upstairs Lounge.
So many shows in August that I can't even think. The return of downer trash band RUSSIAN TSARLAG w/ avant-pop acts SHV & PARTS AND PIECES OF PAST TICIPELS. YELLOW CRYSTAL STAR turns his space guitar into star dust at BOLOZONE. ROBERT INHUMAN screams alive with MAVIS CONCAVE! PPM RECORDS' own GUN OUTFIT play art damaged grunge pop in the vein of Dinosaur Jr. From the gutters of New York HALFLINGS (one of my favorite live acts ever) take apart everything you ever thought you knew about power electronics and create a whole new monster. Chicago's CACAW are raw punk in the most vile form. Fast furious and fun, they will bring you down to their level. NIGHTMARES - Mark Solotroff (Bloodyminded, Intrinsic Action), Jonathan Canady (Deathpile, Angel of Decay), and David Reed (Luasa Raelon, Envenomist) - enough fucking said.
Cherokee Ladies In Heat: Apop Records and Binge & Purge team up for a celebration day! Come out for records, clothes, curious oddities, modern wonders, BBQ, live music, and so much more. Punk Extravaganza in the Binge & Purge back lot with: DARK AGES, SKAREKRAU RADIO, GODFODDER, LESTER SHY & THE SHYPHONICS, and everyone's new favorite synth-punk band - MEDICAL TOURISTS!! Should be a trip. Saturday, August 22nd! ALL DAY!!
