PLUG: Friday, December 16th - We see the arrival of Quicksails and Ryley Walker from Chicago, IL on their Bleak Horizons Winter Tour. For those of you who don't know, Quicksails is the synth-based project of Ben Baker Billington of Tiger Hatchery, White Prism, and Moonrises! Ryley Walker is also on tour. Walker's beautiful guitar flourishes conjure up thoughts of John Fahey and Evan Miller, eminating from his incredible 12-string guitar technique. Duddley Fogg is a mysterious modular synth / shoegaze guitar duo from the past, here to piece together our future in a time warp of sound. Local Analord Kevin Harris demonstrates patience. We see the Kingston Family Singers new direction in mixed media, melding video, synthesis, and musique concrete. Note: Billington is one of my oldest noise buddies. I've never seen him do a bad thing musically. Ever.

Profile: What We Won't See

This past weekend St. Louis was treated to amazing performances by both Rick Weaver's Dinner Music project and Austin, TX's Cruddy. However, what seemed to stand out on its own was a set by What We Won't See, the new project of Brain Transplant's Chris Smentkowski. Teaming up with Scott Tallent on bass guitar, Smentkowski takes the reigns on guitar in this drum machine-driven band. Similar in sound to the likes of Big Black and Suicide, WWWS's songs ride the post-punk mindwave with textural guitar phrases and throbbing bass. Check them out for yourself and be sure to keep an eye peeled for their next show announcement.

New Release: ESCALADE Presents Chuck and Rufus in "We're Sensitive"

This month, Escalade (aka the booty-dance crunk off moniker of Sean Burk) released a new album entitled "ESCALADE Presents Chuck and Rufus in "We're Sensitive." In this new effort, we find Burk taking residency at the producer chair, opposite a duo simply known as Chuck and Rufus. Almost in complete contrast to the super bumpin' tracks of Escalade, Chuck and Rufus perform with a sonic onslaught of feedback, guitar, drums, and slurred-vocals. More akin to Burk's other band, Catholic Guilt, Chuck and Rufus will satiate any aural hunger with an attack of crumbling dissonance.

New Mix: Peter Seligman - Pitbull Vomit Science

This past week saw the release of a new mix by St. Louis speedfreak, Peter Seligman. As a frequent experimental/noise concertgoer, Seligman has finally made his mark by entering the realm of DJing and audio experimentation. Having crafted a repertoire of frenzied tracks and remixes for the public to get down to, Seligman has alread found himself DJing at venues like the Crack Fox and Floating Laboratories. His penchant for hyper-drive noise squall and beat-driven industrial filth can clearly be seen in his current mix, Pitbull Vomit Science. Featuring tracks from Merzbow, Mr. Oizo, Future Sounds of London, Astral Social Club, and ZZ Pot.

Doom Town create rip-wire alt-punk in the vein of Dead Moon and The Wipers with a heavy St. Louis influence. Last night, St. Louis' own The Conformists played a 19-song set to a raging crowd in celebration of their 15 year anniversary / singer Mike Benker's farewell. Seperated into three different segments, the Conformists played with three different drummers (Pat Bolan, Shawn O'Connor, and Tom O'Neill) respective to their time served in the band. In addition to playing cuts off of their three studio albums (Two Hundred, Three Hundred, and None Hundred), the band played some deep tracks including 'Hatch-it' and 'Black Dahlia.'

The Conformists' last show with Mike Benker is tonight in Chicago, IL at Quencher's Saloon. Spelling Bee and The Columbines open the show.

As the days get shorter and the nights colder, the game of booking shows becomes more and more difficult. In the age of digital media, concertgoers can passively check out a band in less than 30 seconds, making the decision of "Should I stay or should I go" both easy and apathetic. Thankfully, the kids were out in throngs last night for Supersonic Piss, The Liz, and St. Louis' own Shaved Women.

I arrived just minutes into Supersonic Piss' set. Jam packed on the recreational side of a smokey CBGBs, I was once again in awe of the punk-addled monster. Having caught SSP in Iowa City this past summer, I can honestly say that they bring it to every set they play. Hovering between noise rock and spazz punk, SSP annihilate on every level: thundering percussion, dynamic chainsaw guitar, tidal wave bass, and the enigmatic howl of lead singer, Paige Harwell. Harwell's stage presence puts her up there with the greats: Blank stares, hard-stomping, confrontation, and a voice that ranges from gravel pit growl to horror-film shriek. Supersonic Piss are truly masters of their niche.

Minneapolis' The LIz quickly took the stage, launching into a short set of feedback drenched rock n roll. The Liz are elementally psychedelic with hints of post-hardcore. Explosive repetition, crumbling riffs, and guttural moans defined this sonic shocked quartet.

In a smart move by promoter, Luc Michalski, Shaved Women played last on the bill. Quickly having risen to the top of most STL hardcore/punk kids' list of favorite bands, SW did not disappoint. Rowdy and riled, the band kicked off the set with a bit of new material from their upcoming record. Sporting leather jackets (with bare-chests underneath!) singer Ben Salyers and bassist Johnny Birkner looked like a psychosexual duo straight out of 'Cruising.' Angst-filled vocals, Greg Ginn-esque guitar, solid drumming, and Birkner's wild bass stylings launched a rather aggro crowd into a fury. After plowing quickly through their set, SW changed the pace by ripping into 'Static,' a rather slow burner, trudging through mud and bone. A good chunk of the crowd sang along gregariously to such (now) classics like "Circles" and "Every Day Life," following with a killer version of The Ramones' "Endless Vacation." What has become an ending staple to their sets, Shaved Women knocked off a cover of Die Kruezen's "Think For Me." The night was done.

Jack Buck is the newest band on the roster of St. Louis' Heaviest of Heavies. Characterized by spinal shock guitar riffery, gut-growling vocals, and a freight-train paced rhythm section, Jack Buck are an unstoppable force that are heavy enough to kill a bridge troll. As a welcomed new voice to the St. Louis hardcore/metal/punk community, Jack Buck have been keeping busy, through rigorous practice, recording in the studio, and even scoring an opening spot for Louisville’s Coliseum.

This weekend, the culmination of months of the band’s hard work will come to fruition with the release of their new 7”, Ugly. The Ugly 7” contains three tracks of crashing, caustic rock induced with elements of sludge, hardcore, and technical thrash. Arriving in a custom made wooden case with the band’s name carved into, this treasured recording delivers a rusty punch to the synapses.

Jack Buck’s Colin Webb was kind enough to speak about the band’s origin, recording process, and the construction of the 7”.

How did the band get together?

I believe there was a craigslist ad involved. That casual encounter got the drums and guitar in the same room. And that was a big room, which will be explained. The bass player and I had been in a band in Columbia, Missouri three years prior called MAR that was snuffed before it even got a fair breath. I was old friends with the drummer, who asked me if I wanted to jam, with the stipulation that I show up with that bass player from the old band. I showed up on crutches Oct. 15th of last year, fresh off ankle surgery, which was fine because of them drugs… and I brought that bass player. We clicked musically and socially, hard to say which is more important.

How did you carry on with the recording process? 

Daniel Ruder. He's this really excellent working recording engineer that happens to be our drummer. He did his internship under Steve Albini (Silkworm, Nirvana, The Jesus Lizard) at Electrical Audio. When he's not teaching audio at Webster University, where he studied, he's recording local bands and choirs live or note by note. He has access to the studios at the college and we banged out 3 songs over a weekend in July in Studio A. He then took it up to Chicago and had it mastered at Chicago Mastering Service by Jason Ward. It’s amazing how important mastering is for good vinyl sound. We’re all thrilled with the way this thing came out. We’re currently practicing in Daniel’s future studio, which is the entire finished third floor of his house in South City. We also play tackle football up there between songs.

The 7” casing is a gorgeous slab of wood, with a relief cut of the band’s name. How was the 7" constructed?

It all started about 40 years ago in a forest somewhere. Baltic birch trees pushed their ways skyward, dreaming of being the future housing for a piece of plastic that plays crushing riffs.  

Really, we first had the idea of photographing a piece of wood that was CNC routed (computer routing). So we found a local guy that had the machine. He made us a few samples and we were blown away. The sample just kind of looked like a record could fit inside. We crunched some numbers and got the guy to make them. We thought we were smart. Little did we know that once we had the fronts cut, there was still a seven step process to getting them to the finished product. Gluing, sanding, etc… let’s just say with our experience, we’re now considering opening up Jack Buck Wood Works.

What do you think St. Louis' music community is missing?

Maybe nothing. It seems like every week I’m discovering new local bands, songwriters, comedians and orchestras with a ton of talent. We must not be a very patient city for music. Acts seem to disappear just as you get comfortable with them. Except of course for the Conformists, who we’ll be playing our record release show with this Saturday. They’ve been doing it right for 15 years.

I am truly excited for what Jeremy has put together this season! It should be a great fall full of life-changing musical events. Please don't sleep on this, St. Louis.

"Hi gang ( please forgive the longwinded email below ) -

As many of you know, I started working for the NMC last year as their program coordinator. Basically I do all the arrangements for their concerts. I am genuinely excited about this year, and would be totally remiss if I didnt give you a heads up about some of whats coming through. Consider this informal email a formal HEADS UP!

Our first concert is THIS COMING SATURDAY ( sept 17th ) at the Kranzberg ( which is a cool little space tucked away inside of the Big Brothers Big Sisters building at 501 N. Grand).

YES - THIS SATURDAY:

Joe McPhee's Survival Unit III will be performing. Its a total MUST for any free-jazz fan. Hes a true free music diehard and legend...he's studied with Pauline Oliveros, played with Brotzmann, tours regularly with Chris Corsano, etc etc etc too many to name. Fred Lonberg-Holm is playing cello in this trio and is a figurehead in his own right ( from playing with God-Is-My-Copilot to collaborations with Weasel Walter and Kevin Drumm ).

WORKSHOP - Joe McPhee will also be leading a workshop at FPCC this Saturday from 2pm-3pm. I encourage all of you to attend...whether you are a musician or not. Bring any instrument you want. Basically he will be talking about what he does, how he does it, his ideas...and will be highlighting his techniques. It will be cool.

THIS YEAR:

The rest of this year will be very cool too. Keith Whitman, Matthew Shipp, Tony Conrad, Chris Corsano ( trio with Dave Stone + Darin Gray ). Olivia Block will be some personal highlights for me. I also encourage you to take a risk on some of the unknown names as well ( some of last years concerts that I thought I'd wouldn't dig so much, ended up being some of the best ). I also hope to update our merch table with St. Louis's most active experimental labels ( Nathan Cook's CLOSE-FAR, and Rick Weavers HUMAN-CONDUCT have already signed on ).

* I should also add, you are all artists - and the admission for artists is $7.00. Don't let the $15.00 regular admission price scare you off - it used to scare me off before I started working for NMC.

SUICIDE MAGNETS (Philly)
Secular nun Wendy J. Hyatt spreads the message thru voice, guitar,
radios, pamphlets, impromptu tongues, atmosphere. Wendy's the head of
the Department of Bad Ideas and Gentle Mending, one department of many
in a school she's decided we all attend. Suicide Magnets is a
variable band in the aftermath of rock, heavily driven by melodic
chorus aftfected vocalizations over hollow strumming, with lyrics that
mix and mingle with grounded culture and surreptitious spiritualism.

DICK NEFF (Philly)
The alter ego of Lance Simmons, head of C.G.I. (Cartoon Graphics
Imaging), sonically delivers his world of grotesque and playful gore
through physical voluminous colorful rhythmic force. Mr. Neff rigs up
a spare drum kit with drum triggers, sending the signal thru a table's
worth of alterations and modifications, then sending that thru a pile
of amps. Heavy momentum induces ritual and dance, while "heady" and
colorful electronics ice the raw pummel of Dick Neff's kit style.

ESCALADE
Sean Burke of Catholic Guilt breaks out of his shell, with or without
a cane, and vocalizes a stream of steamy lyrics over a repertoire of
inexhaustible and infectious melodies and arrangements in the mix with
crystalline and thick electronic beats. The shades come on and the
shirt comes off, abandon is the name of the game. Currency means
something different here, open the vaults, welcome all.

DINNER MUSIC
Dinner Music, not Dinner Party, in honor of Ms. Hyatt's presence,
pulling from the Scripture of Christopher, will provide the live
accompaniment to a movie she co-directed titled Untitled Moving
Picture No. 1, Winter '10, "starring" (along with Wendy) Tomas
Bennett, Kevin Esposito, Christine Jones, Larva Lou, & Rick Weaver.

JEREMY KANNAPELL

I've always been mesmerized by Ice's printed art. His flyers, illustrations, and collages have hung on my walls for years and have never failed to seduce and hypnotize me. So it's no surprise his moving visuals, in the realm of film, are on par with his posters. Reaching back into his crawl space of dark memory with totally alien color streams and shapes, dissonant and vivid frames, hit it sharp second by second. Kannapell will be premiering a new film (or two?) for the occasion. As far as I can tell, he doesn't show these out much, making me feel like I "can't wait".

MIKE PAGANO

Not sure what Mr. Pagano's got up his sleeve for the evening, perhaps a screening of a short movie and / or performance. Mike runs with the Staged Fright Media pack. He's been know to direct movies about "city fresh" slaughter, play analog synthesizer with Chalk, co-produce live theater such as "Show Me the Fuckin' Musical", document dates in the woods, speakeasies, etc. He could do anything. His hands are dirty, busy, and on the move.

New duo featuring Wiggpaw of Skarekrau and Rick Weaver. Sharpening, extending, & stretching oscillating pendulums to tickle the fancy of any corrupt odor that might walk through the backdoor. Capture the natural sounds of panting, grunting, modification, nature, drums, guitars, whatever. The performance will provide the live soundtrack to GRAVOIS GRAVEYARD (featuring Vinnie Meridian, the Tent Brothers, and others), the latest silent movie from the inimitable and fabulous FAMILY VISIONS CENTER.

Here are a few videos of Dazzling Killmen performing live on Critical Mass. Critical Mass was a public access show hosted by Dee Dee Schofield on Double Helix TV (KDHX) in the early 90s. Dazzling Killmen (St. Louis, MO) were a domineering force of brute sound underlined by proficient technical skill, and a fierce intensity matched by few. Having released material on Skin Graft Records, the members would end up in such bands as Grand Ulena, You Fantastic, Laddio Bolocko, Colossamite, and Sicbay. Killer!

The Float Yr Face Music Festival is 2 nights of experimental music and sound design in St. Louis, Missouri. Created by Floating Laboratories founder Kevin Harris and Flood Yr Face creator Josh Levi, the Float Yr Face Music Festival will feature 16 acts operating in the worlds of analog synthesis, broken electronics, ambient soundscapes, and improvisational dementia.

Last night St. Louis was treated to an evening of skullkrushing guitar drone, cassette lust, sax quest worship, and video experimentation! Rick Weaver, Larva Lou, and Melissa Debus kindly opened their home for the second show at the Family Visions Center (3706Texas, just a few blocks south of Cherokee St.). Philadelphia's Night Burger (aka Noah Anthony of Social Junk) and Zack Kouns (formerly of Social Junk) from Lexington rolled through with local support from Catholic Guilt and a short set from Larva to a new video feature. Unfortunately, Ghost Ice had to drop off due to equipment troubles, but provided superb sound for the evening.

Catholic Guilt performed a set similar to their Record Store Day performance, proving their current sludge induced haze is here to stay. Drummer Ben Salyers provided a consistent, steady beat crashing to the dirge of Stein, Zengerling, and Burk. Be sure to catch them this Friday opening for Ga'an with Spelling Bee and Skarekrau Radio at Cranky Yellow.

The talk of the trash dog circuit this year has most certainly been Night Burger. On the same level as Coppertone (Sasha Wiseman), Lazy Magnet (Jeremy Harris), and Container (Ren Schofield), Night Burger mixed his stolid vocal approach with cassette driven beats and whirring squalls and synth lines. A total killer on a humid night in STL.

Zack Kouns busted a set of delayed sax drawl morphing into a hare krishna-like vocal croon. A little steamy for some of the audience's taste, ZK still lit the barn for a short and sweet jam.

Last night was also the debut of "White Famine," a new video short from the FVC film crew. Starring Melissa Debus as a woman who stumbles upon a mysterious hotline, she encounters a maniacal drug-fueled ruffian portrayed by Rick Weaver. Recorded on a handheld video camera, this quick-cut short was a refreshing piece from an ever-evolving creative mind troupe. An original soundtrack was provided by Larva Lou with a potent mix of vocal samples and feedback warblings. I'll be looking forward to the next in a slew of videos, including Cock Film by Rick Weaver & Rick Wilson (Skarekrau Radio).
